Endometriosis

Endometriosis:


Endometriosis is commonly affected female of the reproductive age and can be developed by finding endometrial tissue outside the uterus. It can be developed when there is abdominal cavity during menstrual periods and tissue lining of uterus are located by backing up the fallopian tubes. Pelvic pain and serious health diseases can be felt by the patients.

Causes of endometriosis:

Retrograde-menstruation theory is the cause of developing endometriosis. Sometimes week immune system may grow tissue lining and implant these tissues outside the uterus.

Endometriosis can be developed by genetic theory.

Signs and symptoms of endometriosis:

Pain during menstrual periods: Patients with endometriosis may feel severe pain before and during the menstrual periods. Sometimes pelvic pain and abdominal pain may start.

Excessive bleeding: You have excessive bleeding between menstrual cycles. Sometimes you may feel heavy periods.

Infertility: women who are undergoing treatment for infertility may develop endometriosis.

Other symptoms include:

  • Discomfort menstrual cramps
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Painful during intercourse
  • Burning or stinging sensation during urination.

Diagnosis of endometriosis:

Health care provider will asked questions related to symptoms to detect the disease. Physical examination and pelvic exam will be performed by the health care providers.

Laparoscopy and imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging are also effective to determine the endometriosis.

Treatment for endometriosis:

The types of treatment depend on the signs and symptoms of endometriosis.

Hormone therapy: Hormones therapy is very effective to reduce the pain. Hormones may cause endometrial implants to break down, thick and bleed during menstrual periods.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists and antagonists: These drugs may be helpful to block the ovarian-stimulation hormones. Artificial menopause is created by these drugs. Use of these drugs can be decreased side effects.

Medroxyprogesterone: This drug is very effective to decrease the growth of endometrial implants. Depressed mood and gain in body weight are the side effects of these drugs. Use of this drugs also given relieve from symptoms of endometriosis.

Oral contraceptives: Oral contraceptives such as birth control pills may help to control the growth of endometrial tissue. Oral contraceptives will be prescribed by the doctor for a long period. When women are using the birth pills, they have shorter menstrual flow.

If signs and symptoms of endometriosis can occur, go to your health care provider as soon as possible. Screening test will be recommended by the doctor in case of your mother and sister has endometriosis.
