Pelvic inflammatory disease refers to inflammation and infection on the genital area in women. This disease may affect the fallopian tubes, uterus, ovaries and other organs that linked to regrowth. These organs can develop the scarring, which can lead to chronic pelvic pain, infertility, sores that contain pus, tubal pregnancy and other serious health diseases. It can associate by the infection of gonorrhea and Chlamydia.
The main cause of pelvic inflammatory disease is infertility in women. The disease is an infection surrounding pelvic tissues, which become irritated, inflamed, redness and swollen. It is also the result of surgeries and gynecological procedures.
Causes:
The main cause of Pelvic inflammatory disease is infection of germs such as Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia trachomatis. Mostly, it is found in women, between the ages of 15 to 25. Infection of germs can be transmitted easily by sexual contact. Other types of germs also play a big role to develop this disease.
Risk factors for PID:
- Having sex with multiple partners
- Sexual activities are not safe
- Having sex with somebody, who suffers from Sexually transmitted disease.
Symptoms and signs:
- Pain in abdomen
- Pain during urination
- High fever
- Irregular menstrual periods
- Vaginal discharge
- Painful intercourse
- Severe pain in the upper abdomen
- Vomiting and nausea
- Heavy vaginal bleeding
Diagnosis of Pelvic Inflammatory disease:
Physical examination will be recommended by the doctor to diagnose the disease. Health care provider may examine the patients internally and he/ she can examine the abdomen. Sometimes, an ultrasound scans also helpful to determine the disease. The doctor can also check for gonorrhea and Chlamydia, cervical discharge and high fever. In some cases, laparoscopy may be recommended by the doctor. Tissue samples can be taken by the doctor and sent it to laboratory for examine it.
Treatment:
Antibiotics will be prescribed by the doctor to reduce the infection. Patients can take OTC pain killers and excessive rest. In some cases, surgery may be needed, if infection transmits deeper into the abdomen. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as steroids may be prescribed by the doctor to reduce the scarring and inflammation. Immediate medical attention may be necessary in case of severe pelvic inflammatory disease.
Prevention:
- Patients should avoid multiple sexual partners.
- Patients should use latex condoms during sex.
- Patients should go to doctor immediately, if he/she has any signs and symptoms of STI.
- Patients should avoid sexual activities during the diseases.
