PREMATURE EJACULATION

What is premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation is when a man ejaculates ("comes") too quickly during intercourse.

It is very common in young males, but can affect males of any age.

What causes premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation is almost always caused by psychological concerns (ie. anxiety) rather than a physical problem.

"Performance anxiety" most often occurs with a new sexual partner. However, it is perfectly natural to be a bit nervous the first time.

Physical causes of premature ejaculation include diabetes, a tight foreskin, and disorders of the nervous system.

What can you do to prevent premature ejaculation?

Be as relaxed as possible prior to lovemaking.

The distraction technique:

When you feel yourself reaching climax, think of something non-sexual (like naming the players of your football team) - this will help take your mind off sex & reduce the chance of you climaxing too soon.

The stop-and-start technique:

When the man recognises that he is about to ejaculate, stop all sexual stimulation for ~30 seconds and then resume lovemaking. This can be repeated as often as required until you are ready to ejaculate.

The squeeze technique:

Squeezing just below the tip of the penis for 10-20 seconds also helps delay ejaculation. This technique can be repeated as often as required until you and your partner are ready for you to ejaculate.

Getting help

Premature ejaculation often settles with time as your confidence grows with your partner.

However, your GP will be able to check that there is no physical cause for premature ejaculation and can also help with counselling/advice if required.
