satvik diet

According to Ayurveda and Yoga, food is responsible for the individual's physical, mental and spiritual development. Since food is the source of vitality, errors in diet will cause disorders. This is why we should be well aware of the properties of the food we eat.

In India, Ayurveda and Yoga put food into three categories: satvik (pure or superior quality), rajasik (medium quality) and tamasik (inferior quality).

Satvik are the foods that maintain the body's health, give it strength and vitality, render it immune to illness, and create physical, mental and spiritual balance. Satvik therefore means ideal or superior quality food. Such foods are easily digested and do not cause uric acid or other toxins to accumulate in the body. By consuming satvik foods or following a diet of ideal food, one may preserve one's strength to a very great age without suffering from illness. This is why satvik preserves the body and mind in peace and perfect equilibrium.

In the satvik category, we find fruit, vegetables, green salads, lentils, milk, curd, cottage cheese, fresh butter, hazelnuts, almonds and dried fruit, honey, rice and dishes with small quantities of whole-wheat flour.
